The
McKinney Avenue Transit Authority
is a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization operating under a
City of Dallas, Texas, franchise. Almost all of MATA's staff consists
of a team of dedicated volunteers who are responsible to our Chairman
and a Board of Directors comprised of prominent members of the local
business community.
MATA,
a heritage or historical trolley system rather than a museum, attempts
to recreate how a real trolley system of the early to mid-twentieth
century looked and operated. You can experience riding a vintage
streetcar down a busy city avenue "serenaded" by the singing
of the wire, the clang of the bell, the toot of the whistle, the
whine of the motors, the thump of the air compressor, and the hiss
of the air brakes releasing. These are real working streetcars in
an urban environment that have logged thousands of miles rumbling
up and down the line since its opening in 1989.
We
invite you to take a virtual tour of our system, then after your
appetite has been whetted, please visit us in person. There's a
warm Texas-sized
"Welcome Aboard!" waiting
for you at the McKinney Avenue Trolley line.
